5Wonderful, especially great value for the money - transforms any pool into a lap pool  Aug 28, 2008 By Art Commerce
My daily workout has mostly been running on the beach sand, but 50-miles per week of this over five years has worn out my Achilles tendons. I wanted to substitute swimming for running, but my apartment building's pool is to small and shallow for laps, and my local health club's pool is always too crowded and a hassle. I was skeptical of this device upon first discovering it, but a LA County lifeguard mentioned to me that he knew of university swim team coaches that hand these out to their team members before summer break, so they can stay in shape wherever they go.

I have been using this for a couple of months, and it has been working great for me, and has definitely been worth the price. Everyone who has seen me using it in our apartment building's pool asked where they can get one.

One caveat: for it to work for me, I had to attach a mountain climbing hook to it, so the end of it can be attached to the pool ladder. Basically, I wrap the bungee once around the ladder handle, and hook it to itself. Out of the box, the end doesn't seem to be designed to attach to anything I know of that is at the edge of a pool. The hook I use is a Petzl Spirit that I bought at an outdoors/camping equipment store for around $5. I recommend you get one when you order this.

Conclusion: this device transforms any swimming pool into a lap pool for exercise, and it is a great value, although one might wish to augment it with a mountain-climbing hook.

4Good Alternative for Swimmers in Short Pools.  Dec 07, 2009 By N. Kipp
I purchased this belt so that I could swim in my building's pool, which is just long enough to make you want to swim laps and just short enough to make you dizzy when you do so. I've owned the belt for a few months now and for the most part, it's a great way to "swim" when you don't have access to open water or a long enough pool.

Pros:
- It's comfortable--I've had no irritation when swimming constantly for up to an hour.
- It's reliable--the strap has never come undone during a swim; the clip & tether are study*
- It's small enough so that it can be packed during travel for use in hotel pools.
- It doesn't cost a whole lot.

Cons:
- Does not replicate the "feel" of regular swimming (explanation below)
- Fraying around elastic at the end of the tether after ~10 uses (repairable if it breaks)*

So, for experienced swimmers--which I am not--who have not tethered, this thing is going to make you feel like your feet are dragging on the bottom of the pool. In fact, in the first few uses, I think mine were. Since you're not actually MOVING through the water, there is nothing flowing underneath you and pushing your body up toward the surface. If your legs sink like mine do, then this makes it especially hard to keep them up. The solution for me was to 1) tether myself to a point higher than the pool ladder (like a railing outside the pool) and 2) to make a pair of ankle cuffs from some wrist bands an elastic so I can hoist my feet up to almost tether height. These two things put me in a much more horizontal position in the water, and it's much easier to stroke/breath normally.

On the whole, this has been a great buy. When mine finally wears out I may go with the other tether I considered, which attaches to your ankles, to see if that solves my leg sinking problem. In the meantime, I'm happily swimming in place.

Bottom line: I highly recommend it for swimming workouts in short pools.

5No need for special attachments  Dec 03, 2008 By David
I've used a product like this for years and really like it. Great strength training! Regarding the previous review that it's hard to attach, actually it's easy. Wrap the cord around any object, like a ladder rung, and run the belt through the loop.

3decent product, tangles in feet  Jun 23, 2009 By John F. Phillips "Dad, Grandad, coach, swimmer, marathoner, average guy"
Not sure about the more than wonderful experience of others, but this does NOT easily attach to anything. I find it tangles in feet and gets in the way. Not the best solution, but ok.

5A wonderful Low cost solution to exercising in a small pool  Apr 05, 2011 By Joshua D. Goodstein "Goodsy"
I used to be a hardcore swimmer, and life took over. I quickly became an overweight middle aged man. I have a small pool in my backyard that is about 18-22 feet long, not nearly long enough to do laps. With two small kids, going to the gym is not practical. I looked into getting and endless pool, but that coast was over $13,000. So I found this band and others like it. I figured that this one was the least expensive and I would try it out. After reading reviews one would think that it tangles your legs, is hard to use. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here is my full review:

The tyr belt is a 2" nylon belt of webbing covered in a soft cover to prevent chaffing or uncomfort. It has a small nylon strap around the belt with a metal clip double seamed into it for great strength. The small strap is adjustable so you can move it for different swim styles or strokes. The metal clip attaches to a metal mountain climbing type clip which is securely fastened to the bungee cable. The bungee is quite strong and covered in a black wrap. This goes to the end of the wrap that has a nylon webbed ring for attaching to something at the side of the pool. In the package comes a training or instruction DVD, but I threw it out.

I have a baby fence installed around my pool. I put the loop around one of the poles at the bottom, jumped in the pool, put the belt on, and started swimming. Total setup time 1 minute.

Swimming was as normal. I clipped my feet on the band maybe three times, absolutely not an issue, I think the reviews that state otherwise are grossly exaggerated. The one thing I did find was that while swimming freestyle, you do indeed create a vortex by the side of your head while moving. This causes the water to lower allowing easy breathing to the side. While swimming with this band, you need to turn your head about 1 inch higher, took about 5 minutes to get used to.

The tension in the band is good and you can feel when you have resistance. I liked it it let me know when my stroke was easing off, it also helped me find the right spot to swim in the pool at a comfortable pace/level. Due to the low level of my band I noticed some fraying on the cord where it rubbed against the end of the pool. I took a 5" section of pvc pipe and slipped it over the cord and it no longer occurs. My wife got a rubber mat to lay over the edge of the pool to prevent it from occurring as well. If I raised where the loop was by about 6 inches it probably wouldn't be an issue.

There is no reason to buy anything more expensive than this product. I am absolutely thrilled that i purchased it and would highly recommended it to anyone.
