4Great Cleaner  Dec 11, 2006 By Andrew J. M. Evans
I have had this puppy in my pool for 7 years constant, I NEVER take it out, it runs 8 hours a day, 7 days week, 365 a year (I'm in Florida). Sure it needs regular parts, and the newer replacement parts from Hayward DO last longer, it's not a great wall climber if you let the part get worn, wings and shoes are at least a seasonal (about $30) replacement. Make sure you have good vacum as well, if you have trees around your pool, get a leaf basket. After an over night storm I have seen it clean a pool completly in 3 hours...and you know, that wall climbing is not such a bad thing, most stuff is on the bottom anyway. Sure it will not do steps and it will get hung up on ladders...I'm not sure what you expect...However, you can get a device that keeps it off ladders. I like this little feller, he works hard and well, I am just buying a new one for my home up north and ditching my expensive Polaris! (oh by the way, you can get a complete set of all moving parts, innards the lot for around $120)

2Constant maintenance  Oct 24, 2009 By S. Turner "akaidraco"
I'm not sure if the reviewers that gave this product such a raving review have actually used this product, or have only had it for a month. I've had this product for 3 years, and we've had several moving parts replaced each year -- some twice. It worked well for the first few months, then seemed to go downhill after that. It now constantly gets stuck for long periods of time (hours) at the bottom of the steps (not on the step), climbs the wall and stays there for hours, and barely moves anymore. If you have larger, or odd-shaped debris/twigs in the pool, be prepared to unclog it occasionally.

If you don't mind spending money every year repairing/replacing moving parts, and babysitting it from time to time, then consider this product. Otherwise spend your money elsewhere. If it didn't work well in the beginning, I'd give it only 1 star.

4Pretty good  Apr 16, 2006 By Pool Enthusiast
I've had this unit for over 1 month. I was very skeptical about the cleaning ability of this unit to begin with. The directions are not the easiest to follow. It took me 30 minutes in total to install this device in my pool. Once installed...I watched this badboy for hours. When installed correctly, this unit will indeed clean up the side of your walls. There is also a switch which tells this unit to climb the wall more often.

In the beginning, I watched this unit work very carefully. Now, I just sit back and let it do its work, knowing it will clean my pool well. It does indeed go up walls. What it won't do, however, is scale a staircase. I manually have to sweep the dirt off the stair case, but once done, the Navigator makes quick work of it.

I highly recommend this product for people who do not want to deal with the hassle of vacuuming their pool floor and would rather spend the time enjoying their pool. My only regret was not buying the phantom, which also climbs to the surface of your pool to collect the floating debris. I manually have to skim the top with a net, which isn't much of a bother, but why should I need to bother?

1Not Reliable  Jul 20, 2009 By Richard Altenhofen "vonaltenhof"
Read the reviews carefully. I live in Phoenix. We get sandstorms and lots of debris gets blown into pools. I have owned two pools that had Navigator cleaners. Yes, the Navigator will climb walls and do wonderful acrobatics in your pool - for a while. It needs constant attention to unplug its orifice. It needs at least annual maintenance, and it's usually the a-frame that needs replacing. So I asked the technician what's the pool cleaner you see most to work on? Answer: Navigator. Question: What's the most reliable pool cleaner for around here. Answer: Navigator. Technician could not reconcile the conflicting answers. Wish I could offer an alternative but I'm still looking too. Manual vacuums works very well and a lot quicker than Navigator. It just requires you to operate it.

3Wish there was a better product on the market  Oct 31, 2010 By Kevin Taylor
I have had the Hayward Pool Vac in a couple of different pools for around 11 years (since it was Arneson). Up until about 3 years ago the steady replacement of parts. Bearings for the Turbine, Feet, A frames, flappers, etc were ok. I could keep the unit running well for about 50 dollars per year. Then the price for replacement parts started skyrocketing.. its obscene how much the price has gone up. Seems like every time i go to the pool store, another price increase. The second trick, they bundle parts together and charge you more. Before you could just buy the part you needed. Currently, I am spending around 200 dollars per year to keep it running. So every two years I'm buying a new unit just in spare parts. I don't know if this is some kind of trick by Hayward to force people into buying new units ? In either case they win. Gouge you on the parts or cash in on the new sales. I have a dedicated suction line just for the unit. I don't want to plug skimmers and adjust suction, run electrical cords or charge batteries so i live with the Pool Vac. In addition to the high price the parts don't last as long. Must have moved the manufacturing to China :) . In Short, I wish there was another product that was a direct replacement, I would LOVE to dump the Hayward Pool Vac.
