It emits sound at about 110dB, which is similar to the sound of a smoke detector. This alarm is activated when the device falls into a body of water, and the water completes a circuit. With your child wearing the Aqua Alert, you'll have the warning needed to prevent a drowning or near drowning accident. *Note: The Aqua Alert is not a floatation device; when any child is near water, parental vigilance and supervision is always required. Secure, Locking AttachmentThe Aqua Alert was designed to fit the wrists of all children from toddlers to teens. It features a locking attachment, and it fits snuggly even on small children so you won't have to worry about it unknowingly slipping off. In the U.S., drowning is the second leading cause of injury & death of infants & children younger than 15. No family should have to suffer the unimaginable anguish and grief of a drowning accident that could have been prevented. A portion of Aqua Alert's sales are donated to Justin's Club. Justin's Club is a Non-Profit (501C3) Corporation established to help prevent childhood drowning and near-drowning incidents, providing treatment for children whose families cannot afford treatment costs, and for research through non-profit fundraising.Water Activated Alarm110 db can be heard from over 150 feet awayShake band to disengage the alarmEarly detection of drowning childrenPortable and Compact; great for pools, boating, lakes, or visiting homes with pools or bodies of water

Works OK, But How Do You Strap It On? Feb 12, 2010
By J. B. Wilson I got these at a special low price and figured that they would be good insurance since we often have toddlers at the house and I always worry about them wandering off near the pool. Now as far as it works, it is loud and piercing when exposed to water, which is good; but for the life of me I can't figure out how to strap it on a wrist. The buckle doesn't make any sense, so it's not going to be much use if I can't put it on a child's wrist.

great for water safety Jun 29, 2009
By C. Kloski I purchased this for our grandson to wear, our son in laws parents have a cottage on the lake, and I know how quickly kids can get to water when they want to, also our daughter and son in law have a yard fountain/pond in the ground it is a couple feet deep and I worry about that also. But I know it works cause our daughter said our grandson went by the fountain and just put his hand in and the alarm went off and was very loud. The only bad thing is that the watch band that holds it on his wrist broke the 2nd time it was used, Amazon replaced it immediately, but I could not find the right size band to fit it, in any local stores and we live in a big city.

The description might be misleading Jan 08, 2010
By Patratacus For under $5, this device seems like a good water alarm detector. Upon receiving the unit, I took it apart to see how it works. Turns out the device appears to work by shorting electrodes together. There are 4 pairs of electrodes on the top side where the Aqua Alert logo is. I haven't thoroughly test out the circuit, but it seems that you could activate the alarm by either pressing the test button or short any of the electrode pins. The wristband doesn't connect to the alarm circuit at all. That's why it's really misleading when the package says "Alarm is activated when wristband gets wet". I don't think the alarm would go off at all if the only wristband is submerged in water. You would need the entire unit to be under water in order for the alarm to go off since water would act as a shorting medium between the electrode pins. Maybe the word "wristband" is just a poor choice of word. With some minor modification, this will make an excellent water leak detector since it's quite small and the unit is water proof.

too difficult to strap on or get off once you get it on, plus... Aug 14, 2010
By CJS if it goes off - even accidentally, it is ear piercing and you can't get it off - just ridiculous.

Wristband makes it useless Jun 14, 2010
By Chris The alert does make a high pitched sound when it comes in contact with water; however, the ridiculously designed latch for the wrist band is not functional. Not only is it a very fragile piece of plastic, it took 20 minutes to weave the rubber wrist band through it. Trying to adjust it, especially on a wriggling child, was impossible. I am mystified how a product could be released without it ever being tested.
